“Ambitious Heart”
You wake up in the morning
Determined and ready
To make the big jump
You are so excited
That you can feel your heart’s rapid thump
You have worked so hard
To let your courage, take over the
Drive
You get in the car and drive aimlessly
With no destination in particular
You just want to conquer the miles
Let the sun shine in your soul
Let the wind whip through your hair
And all of the sudden
You find yourself smiling
You missed the moments like this
The simplicity of it
You have been working so hard
To get out of the darkness
To make sure you are expressing yourself
In the most perfect sense
That you put the simple things
On the backburner
The Truth is though
That you appreciate the small things
You always have
That’s the nature of your
Ambitious heart
You have survived the hardest times
You have let your heart
Jump for joy
And have lived the good times
To your fullest potential
You have let your stress
Get you down
Tear you apart
To the point that you’re falling down
And pleading for air
Through the tears
At the time you can’t believe the sadness
You don’t want to think that you let
Yourself sink this low
Perhaps it means that your ambitious heart
Has failed and let you down
Or perhaps you were pushing yourself
To your limit
I am always here
Even though it seems like I am so far away
To protect and guard your ambitious heart
I hate to see you hurting and frustrated
So I feel like it is my job to nourish
Your heart with all of the love and care
It can stand
Because you never know when there is too much demand
I love you to the moon and back
And sometimes I wonder if I could ever
Love you more
But the more of your mind I explore
The more I realize just how much you have to offer.
Stand strong
Keep your head up
And make sure you never lose touch
With the fire and ambition in your heart

I remember the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 like they happened yesterday. I remember being a young naive little 12 year old glued to the TV as the women's USA gymnastics team went on to become the first team in history to win a gold medal in gymnastics. I remember the feeling I felt when watching these women (who at the time were teenagers), flip through the air so seamlessly. I was AMAZED and since then, I have never looked back and have never once denied my profound love for the sport. In the months following the Olympic games, I 'pretended' to be a gymnast like the magnificent seven. I would do a head roll from my sister's bed using the my trundle bed down below hers as support and 'flip off' the bed landing on my butt of course because I couldn't stand.     Dear Depression,   I wake up in the morning feeling overtired and stiff as a board, and the day has barely begun. I touch my face, and I feel the wetness of the tears that have blurred my once perfect vision. There were so many thoughts swimming through my mind. So many in fact, that it is almost impossible to differentiate between fact and fiction. You have been making deals with the devil so often that I begin to believe exactly what he has fed into my already disease-ridden mind.   Every step I take towards normalcy and betterment is a hit to your heart. Dear Simone Biles: An open letter to my hero

 Dear Simone,  I feel like I should begin this letter to you by introducing myself. My name is Karla Culbertson. I am a 36-year-old woman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I suppose my interest in gymnastics is influenced by my disability. I am wheelchair dependent due to Quadraplegic Cerebral Palsy. As you can probably guess, gymnastics is even more fascinating to me when compared to the average fan because I cannot even walk and to be able to see you defy gravity time and time again is just that much more incredible to me.  My gymnastics fandom was first inspired by the Magnificent Seven in 1996. Once I watched all seven of those women capture the Gold Medal, I was hooked. I remember buying Dominique Moceanu's autobiography and studying the skills index in the back of the book until I was cross-eyed.
